What is this Indicator? This indicator shows the percentage of 8th grade students who reported being bullied in the previous 30 days prior to the survey.
Why this is important: Bullying is defined as repeated negative, ill-intentioned behavior by one or more students directed against a student who has difficulty defending himself or herself. Most bullying occurs without any apparent provocation on the part of the student who is exposed. Bullying can lead to violence and could potentially have deadly consequences. Students need a safe, nurturing, healthy, and civil learning environment if they are to be successful in school.
This survey is sponsored by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, state Department of Health, Department of Social and Health Services, Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development and the Family Policy Council in cooperation with schools throughout Washington state.
Technical note: This distribution is based on 39 Washington counties. The number of valid responses for the grade 8 survey in Whatcom County was 1594. The confidence interval for this value is 2.2%. |
