Physicians per 1000 Population

Value: 2.29 physicians/1,000 population
Measurement
Period:
2004
Location: County : Whatcom
Categories: Health / Access to Health Services
What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the number of physicians in Whatcom County per 1000 residents.

Why this is important: Physicians are one of the most essential human resources for maintaining health. Equal distribution of physicians in consideration of health care needs is crucial in maintaining and promoting healthy communities. However, the unequal distribution of physicians is a serious problem in many places. Physicians are disproportionately concentrated in cities and are in short supply in rural areas.

Technical note: Data from 2003 and later count all physicians in patient care. Data prior to 2003 count only physicians in patient care who are not employed by the federal government. The trend is a comparison between the most recent and previous measurement periods.
